UK employers recognise Ofqual-regulated Level 3 qualifications. These include the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care and the Health T Level. The Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeship is a recognised route too. Regulated qualifications sit on a regulator’s register and follow set standards. CPD courses do not sit on the register.
Regulated routes need a care job or a college place. Waiting for a care job does not stop you from learning. Quick Recap
- Career changers are included among the intended learners for both providers’ nursing assistant courses.
- Choose course content around your target role rather than its level label alone.
- CPD learning builds knowledge but does not replace supervised practice or workplace competence checks.
What makes a Level 3 qualification recognised in the UK?
A recognised Level 3 qualification sits on a regulator’s register, such as the Ofqual Register in England. Wales and Scotland use separate registers, so this article focuses on England.
Level 3 sits at the same level as A levels. Regulated qualifications also carry an Ofqual qualification number. Skills for Care approves adult care qualifications after checking them against sector specifications.
Which Level 3 qualification suits you if you already work in care?
The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care suits you if you work in adult care in England. An assessor observes your practice at work, so you need a care job.
Providers set their own entry rules, including English and maths levels. Mandatory units cover safeguarding, duty of care, communication and person-centred approaches.
The Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care is the next step up. Skills for Care plans a new Level 4 qualification for new starts from April 2028.
Where does the Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeship fit?
The Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeship includes the Level 3 diploma and the Care Certificate. You need suitable employment in care to start.
Apprentices also reach Level 2 English and maths before the end-point assessment. The Care Certificate has 16 standards since March 2025.
Which Level 3 qualification suits you if you do not work in care yet?
The Health T Level suits post-16 students who do not yet work in care. The two-year course includes an industry placement of at least 315 hours.
Specialisms include supporting the adult nursing team and supporting the mental health team. Colleges describe the outcome as equivalent to three A levels. Adults without a care job need work experience before a workplace Level 3 diploma.
What is the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate?
The Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate is the preferred entry standard in England. Skills for Care launched this qualification in June 2024 to replace the Level 2 Diploma in Care.
An earlier Level 2 Diploma in Care still counts as prior achievement. This entry standard sits below the Level 3 routes in this article.
What is changing for BTEC, CACHE and Cambridge Technical diplomas?
Large Level 3 diplomas from NCFE CACHE, BTEC and Cambridge Technicals lose funding from 2026/27, says NCFE. NCFE launches a new Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Social Care (Diploma) in August 2026.
From 2026/27, NCFE lists the Health T Level and this diploma as the two approved large routes. Some colleges still advertise older titles, so confirm funding and start dates before you apply.
Does a Level 3 CPD certificate count as a Level 3 qualification?
A CPD-accredited Level 3 certificate does not count as a regulated Level 3 qualification. CPD accreditation does not place a course on the Ofqual Register.
Employers decide which evidence they accept for each role. A CPD certificate records learning and adds to your professional portfolio.
A senior care worker applying for a team leader post presents the diploma first. The CPD certificate then adds recent learning in a specific topic.
Is a Level 3 qualification a legal requirement for care roles?
The law requires appropriate training, not one named Level 3 qualification for every role. Regulation 18 of the 2014 Regulated Activities Regulations requires providers to give staff appropriate training and supervision.
This applies to CQC-registered services in England. CQC guidance also expects providers to assess each worker’s training needs at the start of employment.
Some senior role adverts ask for a Level 3 diploma. Such a request is an employer requirement, not a legal one.
What are the common mistakes with Level 3 qualifications?
Four mix-ups are worth avoiding before you choose a route.
- Learners assume a certificate proves workplace competence, but employers assess practice at work.
- Learners mix up the Care Certificate with a Level 3 qualification. The Care Certificate is an induction framework for new care workers.
- Guides apply England-only rules to Wales or Scotland.
- Some guides still list older diplomas without noting the 2026/27 funding change.
How do you check a qualification before you enrol?
You check a qualification by searching the exact title on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Then follow three steps.
- Note the qualification number and awarding organisation.
- Ask your employer which qualification the role requires.
- Confirm funding and start dates with the provider.
A support worker aiming for a senior role asks the manager before enrolling. The manager names the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care. The worker then looks for a provider offering the regulated diploma.m Copy the qualification named in your target job advert and search the Register today.
