You can get safeguarding children Level 3 training from your employer, local safeguarding partnership or NHS e-learning. Your certificate shows completed training and not a qualification.
Level 3 describes the competence your role needs under the Intercollegiate Document for healthcare staff. Education and other sectors use their own guidance and wording. Your role, setting and employer decide the level you need.
Because your level depends on your duties, safeguarding learning often arrives in scattered sessions. Instead, one CPD record shows what you studied. Our Safeguarding Children Level 3 course combines this learning in online modules on safeguarding and UK law. A final exam tests your knowledge. Study these steps as CPD, then follow your employer’s procedures.
Quick recap
- Level 3 is a role-based training level, not a national qualification.
- Healthcare staff giving clinical care to children are expected to hold Level 3, but other sectors differ.
- A certificate shows completed training, while your employer judges workplace competence.
Who needs safeguarding children Level 3 training?
The Intercollegiate Document expects Level 3 from healthcare staff who give clinical care to under 18s. Mental health and substance misuse staff who support adult parents or carers are included. Staff trained at Level 3 also count as competent at Levels 1 and 2.
Does the law require Level 3?
Level 3 expectations come from guidance and employer policy, and the Intercollegiate Document is guidance, not legislation. CQC describes the document as guidance. Employers decide which training suits each role and its risks. They review job duties, contact with children, decision-making and local procedures.
How does the level change by role?
Your duties decide the level, not your job title. A children’s ward nurse gives clinical care to under-18s, so the Intercollegiate Document expects Level 3.
A care worker supporting adults might follow the employer’s adult safeguarding route. A team leader handling child protection referrals might need more depth than colleagues with limited contact.
Do the rules differ across the UK?
Safeguarding training arrangements differ across the UK nations. Keeping Children Safe in Education applies in England. Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023 sets the multi-agency framework local partnerships follow. Scotland and Wales publish their own national training frameworks. Check the guidance for your nation and setting before you book.
Where do you find Level 3 training near you?
Start with your employer, then check your local safeguarding children partnership and integrated care board. Search your council name plus safeguarding children partnership training. Partnerships run multi-agency courses for professionals in their area.
What do local courses look like?
Gloucestershire’s inter-agency Level 3 course has three parts, including a live session with a child protection trainer. The partnership states the course meets Level 3 requirements for health staff. Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board runs Level 3 courses and refreshers for healthcare staff.
Is Safeguarding Children Level 3 available online?
NHS e-Learning for Healthcare offers Safeguarding Children Level 3 online, with ten sessions. The programme shows an update date of March 2026. NHS organisations receive free access, and other organisations might qualify through OpenAthens. Some employers expect a live session, so confirm the format first.
How do you check a course before you book?
Ask your employer or safeguarding lead to confirm in writing which course and format they accept. Then check four points.
- The course names the guidance the content follows.
- The content covers Level 1 and 2 knowledge.
- The course includes an assessment and a dated certificate.
- The provider describes accreditation accurately, because CPD accreditation is separate from Ofqual regulation.
Consider a health visitor who books a course before asking. The employer expects the partnership course, so the training repeats. A written check first avoids this.
How much does Level 3 safeguarding training cost?
Cost depends on the route. NHS staff access e-Learning for Healthcare free through their organisation. Birmingham Safeguarding Children Partnership offers training without charge at the point of booking. Other partnerships and employers set their own terms, so check the booking page. Private providers set their own prices.
Is Level 3 safeguarding training the same as a Level 3 diploma?
A Level 3 diploma is a regulated qualification, while Level 3 safeguarding is a role-based training level. Search results often list adult care diplomas, which do not replace safeguarding children training.
A diploma assesses workplace practice over time. A training certificate shows you completed learning.
What does Level 3 training cover?
Level 3 training covers assessing, planning and acting on child protection concerns with other agencies. NHS e-learning sessions cover unexplained injuries, neglect in disabled children and fabricated or induced illness. Training does not replace workplace competence checks or your local referral procedures.
Use the Safeguarding Decision Tree to practise working through a concern. The tool is for training and does not replace your safeguarding lead or local procedures.
How often should you renew Level 3 safeguarding training?
In England, designated safeguarding leads and deputies update training at least every two years. The Intercollegiate Document expects regular refreshes within Level 3 and discussion at annual appraisal. Many health employers set their own interval, often using the Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF).
Next, ask your safeguarding lead which level your role needs. Then book through your local partnership or NHS provider.
What are the common mistakes around Level 3 safeguarding training?
These misunderstandings waste bookings and leave gaps in practice. Check each one before you pay for a course.
- Not every worker needs the same level.
- A completion certificate is not a regulated qualification.
- A certificate does not prove workplace competence.
- Employer policy is not legislation.
- One course does not meet every regulator’s expectations.
- Refresher timing is not the same in every sector.
