Take your Level 3 safeguarding adults refresher through your employer, NHS England or online CPD learning. Your role decides the best route. Health care staff follow the intercollegiate document. General practice staff follow RCGP standards. Social care leaders follow employer policy.
Each group follows a different source. The intercollegiate document suggests 8 hours over three years for health care staff, with about half participatory. RCGP standards expect an annual update in general practice. No law names Level 3 safeguarding adults training for every worker, so your employer decides what counts.
If you lead safeguarding practice, choose learning built for your level of responsibility. The Level 3 Safeguarding Adults course from Royal Open College covers Section 42 enquiries and multi-agency working. You study online at your own pace and order a PDF certificate for your record. Use this guide to match your route, then confirm the choice with your employer.
Quick Recap
- Health care staff: the intercollegiate document suggests 8 hours over three years. About half should be participatory.
- General practice staff: RCGP standards expect an annual Level 3 update.
- Social care leaders: follow employer policy and add CPD learning with a clear record.
Which refresher route suits your role?
Start with your employer. Employers set the format and the compliance point. Then choose one of three routes.
- Employer or board sessions suit health care staff who need participatory learning.
- The NHS England Learning Hub offers an on-demand course. You need a sign-in.
- Online CPD learning suits managers and safeguarding leads who want depth on Section 42 and multi-agency work.
The second edition of the intercollegiate document extends Level 3 to some non-registered roles. Examples include support workers and health care assistants. Ask your employer which level applies to you.
Social care providers follow local policy. No law names Level 3 safeguarding adults training for every worker.
What does a valid Level 3 refresher include?
A valid refresher mixes participatory learning, reflection and an appraisal review. The intercollegiate document gives these suggestions for health care staff in England.
- 8 hours of learning over three years.
- About half of the learning participatory.
- Reflection on at least three aspects of safeguarding.
- Annual review of your competences at appraisal.
Your organisation decides the compliance point. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own frameworks.
Does an online course alone count?
Online learning alone does not meet the intercollegiate suggestion at Level 3. Add discussion, case review or supervision. Your employer decides what counts.
General practice differs. RCGP standards accept virtual and recorded updates, with annual learning and reflection.
What proof should you keep?
Keep a record of dates, topics and changes to your practice. Store three items.
- A certificate or attendance record.
- Reflection notes on your learning.
- Appraisal notes on your competences.
A certificate shows completion. Competence comes from practice, supervision and appraisal.
How do you practise safeguarding decisions?
Use the Safeguarding Decision Tree to rehearse scenarios. The tool produces a report on risk indicators, recording points and suggested next steps.
The tool does not replace professional judgement or your organisation’s procedures. In immediate danger, follow emergency procedures. Discuss each report with your supervisor or team. Ask your employer whether this practice counts toward your hours.
Common mistakes to avoid
Most mistakes start with assumptions. Check these five points before you book.
- Assuming one certificate satisfies every employer.
- Counting online learning toward the participatory half.
- Treating a certificate as proof of competence.
- Applying England-only guidance in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
- Waiting for the three-year point without checking your employer’s policy.
Should you choose the NHS England course or a CPD course?
Follow your employer first. Some employers name the NHS England Learning Hub Level 3 safeguarding adults course. Complete the NHS course first if yours does.
Choose Royal Open College when your role leads safeguarding practice and your employer accepts CPD certificates. Ask your employer to confirm in writing.
