In the UK, online safeguarding children training costs £10 to £65 per person. Live courses cost £125 or more, and local safeguarding partnership courses cost £30 to £100. Your role decides which type you need.
The range exists because courses differ in format and level. Online CPD courses are self-paced and cost the least. Local partnerships run multi-agency sessions for specific roles. Live specialist courses add a trainer, which raises the price. Staff with lead duties often look at Level 3 courses.
Paying for the wrong training wastes budget and leaves gaps in knowledge. Staff with lead duties feel this most, because colleagues bring concerns to them. Our Safeguarding Children Level 3 CPD course gives lead staff structured learning on child protection duties. Check your employer’s requirements first.
Quick Recap
- Online CPD courses cost the least, and live specialist courses cost the most.
- Statutory guidance in England expects suitable training but sets no price or commercial course level.
- A certificate shows you finished a course but does not prove competence at work.
How much does safeguarding children training cost by type?
Safeguarding children training costs between £10 and £450 per person, depending on type. Figures below come from provider and local authority pages checked in November 2026.
Online CPD courses
Level 1 and Level 2 online courses cost about £10 to £40 per person. Level 3 and lead-role online courses cost about £15 to £65. Many providers list prices without VAT.
Local safeguarding partnership courses
Local safeguarding partnerships charge about £30 to £100 per person for multi-agency courses. Nottinghamshire sets £35 to £70 per event from April 2026. Stoke-on-Trent lists £30 for Level 1 and £100 for Level 2.
Live specialist courses
Live virtual courses for safeguarding leads cost £125 to £450 per person. Face-to-face group sessions start at £525 for up to 25 people, plus trainer travel.
How do you work out the cost for a team?
Multiply the per-person price by your headcount, then add VAT and any trainer travel. Ten staff on a £35 online course cost £350 before VAT. A £525 group session for 25 staff works out at £21 per person. A group session saves money mainly for larger teams.

Why do safeguarding children training prices vary so much?
Prices vary because sellers discount list prices and courses differ in format. Some online sellers show a £125 to £425 list price beside a £9 to £30 sale price. Compare the price you pay at checkout, not the crossed-out figure. Printed certificates add £5 to £25 at some providers.
Is free safeguarding children training available?
Free safeguarding children training is available to some groups, depending on sector and location. Nottinghamshire gives free places to voluntary groups with a turnover below £150,000. Stoke-on-Trent exempts voluntary, faith and charitable groups from course charges.
The Department for Education developed free online training for early years educators. Eligibility rules differ by area, so check your local partnership.
Which level of safeguarding children training do you need?
Your role decides your level: all staff need basic awareness, while safeguarding leads need role-specific training. Providers label courses Level 1 to 3, but labels differ between providers and partnerships.
In Stoke-on-Trent, Level 3 means a role-specific multi-agency course. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate arrangements, so check local rules.
Schools and colleges
Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 sets duties for schools and colleges in England. The 2026 edition came into force on 1 September 2026. All staff should receive training at induction and regular updates. Designated safeguarding leads and deputies should undergo training for the role.
Early years settings
The Early Years Foundation Stage framework requires every setting to assign a designated safeguarding lead. Annex C sets criteria for effective safeguarding training.
Healthcare staff
The healthcare intercollegiate framework sets five levels of competence for staff who work with children. Employers and commissioners deliver and monitor those competencies.
How does safeguarding training apply to a real concern?
Training teaches you to recognise a concern, but you report concerns through your organisation’s safeguarding route. Our Safeguarding Decision Tree guides you through concern types, risk indicators and recording points.
The tool ends with a report summary for recording and training discussions. The tool does not replace your safeguarding lead, local procedures or emergency services. Record facts only, and avoid leading questions or promising confidentiality. If a child is in immediate danger, follow emergency procedures.
What are the common mistakes when buying safeguarding children training?
The most common mistake is choosing the cheapest course without checking your role’s requirements. Wrong choices waste budget and leave gaps in staff knowledge.
- Buying the same level for every worker ignores role differences.
- A CPD course is not a regulated qualification.
- An employer’s policy is not the same as legislation.
- One course does not guarantee your organisation meets regulator expectations.
- Budgets often miss VAT, trainer travel and renewal costs.
