Yes, accredited adult safeguarding certifications are available in the UK through five main routes. The routes include CPD-accredited courses, Ofqual-regulated awards and the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate. Diplomas in Adult Care and NHS framework training complete the list.
Each route proves a different thing about your learning. A CPD certificate records structured learning, and an independent body checks the course content. An Ofqual-regulated qualification records formal assessment, often including observation at work. Your duties, your employer’s policy and your UK nation decide which one counts.
If your role involves leading on concerns, the Level 3 Safeguarding Adults course offers a CPD-accredited option. The course covers Section 42 enquiries, mental capacity and multi-agency working through scenario tasks. You finish with a dated CPD certificate to discuss with your manager at supervision.
Quick Recap
- Adult safeguarding certificates are CPD-accredited, Ofqual-regulated or mapped to the NHS intercollegiate framework.
- Frontline care staff, team leaders and NHS clinicians need different routes, so one certificate rarely fits everyone.
• No certificate replaces supervision, because employers assess safeguarding practice through observation and case review.
What accredited adult safeguarding certifications are available in the UK?
Five main types of accredited adult safeguarding certification are available in the UK. A different body stands behind each one.
- CPD-accredited safeguarding adults course (Levels 1 to 3): An independent CPD accreditation body checks the course content. Verify the provider in the accrediting body’s online directory.
- Ofqual-regulated safeguarding award: An Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation sets and assesses the award. Search the qualification number on Ofqual’s register.
- Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate (England only): Ofqual regulates this qualification, and Skills for Care approves its design. Each awarding organisation’s version appears on Ofqual’s register.
- Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Adult Care: An Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation awards the diploma after workplace assessment. Check the qualification number on Ofqual’s register.
- NHS safeguarding adults training: NHS training maps to the intercollegiate competency framework. Your NHS employer’s training record confirms completion.
What does the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate add?
The Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate adds an Ofqual-regulated qualification built on the Care Certificate standards. Delivery started in June 2024 for adult social care staff in England. Standard 10 covers safeguarding adults within the 16 standards updated in 2025.
Assessment includes observation in the workplace, not only online tests. The Department of Health and Social Care reimburses eligible employers for this qualification until 31 March 2027.
How does NHS safeguarding adults training differ?
NHS safeguarding adults training follows Adult Safeguarding: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff, an intercollegiate framework. The Royal College of Nursing published the second edition in July 2024. The update places some support workers and health care assistants at Level 3.
NHS guidance expects at least half of training at each level to be participatory. Group case discussion, workshops and live webinars count, while self-study e-learning does not.
Which accredited safeguarding route fits your role?
The right accredited route depends on your duties, your sector and the evidence your employer wants.
- New care worker in England: start with Care Certificate induction. Your employer might then enrol you on the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate.
- Care worker needing a refresher: a CPD-accredited Level 1 or Level 2 course gives dated evidence.
- Senior carer, team leader or registered manager: a CPD Level 3 safeguarding adults course builds lead knowledge.
- NHS nurse or clinician: follow your trust’s Level 3 route, including participatory sessions. A CPD course adds knowledge but not the participatory hours.
- Career changer wanting a portable qualification: choose an Ofqual-regulated award or a Diploma in Adult Care.
How do you test whether your duties match Level 3?
Working through real concern scenarios shows whether your duties match Level 3. The Safeguarding Decision Tree takes you through concern types, risk indicators and recording points. If you guide colleagues through these decisions, Level 3 learning matches your duties. Use the Safeguarding Decision Tree tool alongside your local procedures, never in place of them.
How do you check an adult safeguarding certificate is genuinely accredited?
A genuinely accredited course names its accrediting body and a number you look up. Before you buy, check the course page for four details.
- The name of the accrediting body, not only a CPD logo.
- A provider or course number listed on the accrediting body’s register.
- An Ofqual qualification number for any course sold as a qualification.
- Learning outcomes you match against your job description.
Search any claimed qualification number on Ofqual’s Register of Regulated Qualifications. Treat CQC-approved labels as a warning sign, because CQC approves no training courses or trainers.
Will an employer or CQC accept an online accredited certificate?
Employers decide which certificates they accept, because no law in England names a safeguarding course or level. Regulation 18 requires CQC-registered providers to give staff appropriate training, support and supervision. Regulation 13 requires those providers to protect people from abuse and improper treatment.
CQC inspectors look at whether staff recognise and report abuse, not at a course brand. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland set their own frameworks, so check local requirements there.
Studying through Royal Open College (CPD learning)
Royal Open College offers the Level 3 Safeguarding Adults course as a CPD-accredited route for lead duties. The course suits senior carers, team leaders, deputy managers and safeguarding leads in adult care. Learning covers Section 42 enquiries, mental capacity, lawful information sharing and multi-agency working.
Assessment combines a multiple-choice exam, scenario tasks and a written assignment. The certificate records CPD learning, not an Ofqual qualification. NHS staff use the course for knowledge alongside their trust’s participatory sessions. Before enrolling, match the learning outcomes to your duties, then confirm the level with your manager.
