The Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate is Ofqual-regulated, takes around six to eight months to complete, and requires a minimum of 40 hours of workplace or voluntary placement to demonstrate competence. Most regulated qualifications in this sector are not fully available online in the same way CPD courses are. They involve a work-based or blended element.
Some learners access them at no cost through the Free Courses for Jobs scheme, available via the GOV.UK National Careers Service for eligible learners aged 19 or over earning under £25,000.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) offers First Steps, a free online learning tool for healthcare assistants. First Steps maps to National Occupational Standards and covers safeguarding, infection prevention, record keeping, confidentiality, and accountability. All learners with a free RCN account access the programme. RCN members receive a completion certificate. First Steps does not award a formal qualification but gives a solid foundation before committing to a paid course.

Not all online nursing assistant courses carry the same credibility. Some accreditation claims sound authoritative but mean very little in a UK healthcare context.

CPD accreditation in the UK is issued by independent bodies, not a single government authority. The CPD Certification Service and CPD Standards Office are among the most recognised. If a course says “accredited” without naming the body behind the claim, ask for the detail before paying.
If a provider claims to offer a regulated qualification, verify it yourself. Go to register.ofqual.gov.uk and search for the qualification title or number. If the qualification does not appear there, the course is not Ofqual-regulated, regardless of how the provider describes it.

NHS alignment means the course covers NHS-relevant topics. Alignment is not formal NHS approval.
The Care Certificate is a set of 16 agreed standards new care and support workers in England are expected to meet during their induction. Skills for Care updated the framework in March 2025 with the addition of Standard 16, covering awareness of learning disability and autism.
Standard 16 was added following the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training requirement, introduced under the Health and Care Act 2022. The requirement states CQC-registered providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
Many online nursing assistant courses include Care Certificate content in their curriculum. This preparation is genuinely valuable. The knowledge built through an online course prepares you for the standards you will work to when you enter a care role.
What an online course does not do is complete or certify the Care Certificate on your behalf. The Care Certificate is an induction framework, not a standalone qualification. Your employer initiates it. Your employer signs it off. No online course replaces the workplace induction process.
If you find any page stating there are 15 Care Certificate standards, treat the information as out of date. The correct number is 16 as of March 2025.
Recognition depends on the type of course and the employer. CPD certificates are widely accepted across social care. NHS trusts apply their own criteria. Regulated qualifications carry more weight for formal NHS career entry.

The title “nursing assistant” is not a protected title in the UK. Employer criteria for the role vary significantly between organisations.
