The requirements for becoming a Level 3 nursing assistant in the UK can feel confusing because employers do not all ask for the same thing. In many healthcare assistant or nursing assistant roles, your care values, communication, reliability, DBS suitability, right to work, and workplace training matter just as much as certificates. Level 3 learning is often more helpful when you are applying for senior care roles, Band 3 HCA jobs, or posts with more responsibility.
A Level 3 CPD course can still be a good way to prepare, especially if you are new to healthcare or want to apply for more responsible support roles. Royal Open College’s Level 3 Diploma in Nursing Assistant Complete Training supports learning around safeguarding, infection control, personal care, communication, medication awareness, mobility, nutrition, hydration, and care documentation, while keeping employer induction, the Care Certificate, regulated qualifications, and workplace competency sign-off separate.
Quick recap
Do you need Level 3 to become a nursing assistant?
Not always. Some entry-level healthcare assistant or nursing assistant jobs focus more on your attitude, care values, communication skills, and willingness to learn.
In the UK, employers may use different job titles. You may see Healthcare Assistant, Healthcare Support Worker, Clinical Support Worker, Nursing Assistant, Nursing Auxiliary, Care Assistant, or HCA. The National Careers Service also lists healthcare assistant alternative titles such as support worker, nursing assistant, and nursing auxiliary.
What does Level 3 mean?
This is where many learners get confused.
Type 01
CPD Level 3 Course
A CPD Level 3 course supports professional knowledge and confidence.
Type 02
Regulated Level 3 Qualification
A regulated Level 3 qualification is different and is usually linked to an awarding body framework.
Type 03
Workplace Competency Sign-off
Workplace competency sign-off is different again, because your employer confirms that you can safely carry out tasks in that workplace.
So, if a job advert says "Level 3 required" or "Level 3 preferred", read it carefully. It may ask for:
Is the Care Certificate the same as Level 3?
No. The Care Certificate is not the same as a Level 3 course.
The Care Certificate is often used as part of induction for new health and social care workers. Skills for Care says the standards were updated in March 2025 and now include 16 standards, including awareness of learning disability and autism.
Many employers still want you to complete their own induction and Care Certificate process after you start work, even if you have already completed CPD training.
What do employers usually check?
Employers normally look at the whole person, not just one certificate.
They may check your right to work in the UK, references, care experience, communication skills, DBS suitability, occupational health, and ability to follow local policy. In care homes, hospitals, clinics, and community care, they also want people who can protect dignity, report concerns, keep clear records, and work calmly with others.
For regulated services, CQC Regulation 18 focuses on having suitably qualified, competent, skilled, and experienced staff, with proper training, supervision, and development. This does not mean one CPD course guarantees compliance. It means employers must make sure staff are prepared for their actual duties.
When is Level 3 more useful?
Level 3 is more useful when you apply for senior care roles, Band 3 healthcare assistant jobs, clinical support roles, or jobs with delegated tasks.
For example, a basic HCA role may focus on washing, dressing, meals, mobility, comfort, and basic records. A more senior role may include patient observations, care notes, specimen support, wound observation, or extra clinical duties under supervision.
Common misunderstandings
Not a Licence to Practise
A Level 3 nursing assistant course is not a licence to practise. It does not guarantee an NHS job, Band 3 role, or automatic employer acceptance.
UK Terminology
CNA is also not the usual UK job title. UK employers usually say:
The Best Approach
The best approach is simple:
Read each job advert
Check the exact requirement
Use CPD learning to strengthen your knowledge before applying
